What is Crime Stoppers?

CRIME STOPPERS is a program that involves the COMMUNITY, the MEDIA and the POLICE in the FIGHT AGAINST CRIME. It offers ANONYMITY and CASH REWARDS to persons who furnish information leading to the capture of fugitives. Crime Stoppers is based on the principle that " someone other than the criminal has information that would solve the crime." Crime Stoppers was created to combat the two major problems faced by law enforcement in generating that information:

  • Citizens' fear of INVOLVEMENT

  • An attitude of APATHY

Crime Stoppers resolves both of these problems by:

  • Offering ANONYMITY to persons who provide information about crimes, and

  • Paying REWARDS when the information supplied leads to arrest.

How Does Crime Stoppers Work?

There are three essential elements:

The Media: Crime Stoppers methods, objectives, and phone numbers are publicized on a regular basis by the media. An unsolved crime is given special treatment with details published  in newspapers and aired on - radio/television.

The Community: Citizens are responsible for forming a Crime Stoppers non-profit corporation, whose Directors establish policy, determine amount and method of reward payments, work closely with the media and police, and oversee the program.

The Police: A special Crime Stoppers phone with a well-publicized number is manned by a Police Coordinator The callers are given a special code number and do not give their names. If, after investigation the, information leads to an arrest, the caller is entitled to a reward in US $.

How do I Report a Crime?

It is very simple to report a crime. Before doing so, we request that you have as many details available as possible in order to assist the Police. The Christian County Crime Stoppers Tips Line number is (217) 824-9100 or 1-800-568-TIPS. This is a stand-alone phone, and the identity of the caller is not known.

What's In It for Me?

We are glad you asked this question. First, and we believe foremost, is the feeling you will enjoy having contributed to the safety of your community. You will also have made a contribution to your local economy by saving hours, and perhaps days of the Officer's time which all cost a great deal of money. You will have assisted in putting criminals where they belong. Of course, do not forget you will enjoy a reward with no questions asked if your information led to an arrest and indictment. Isn't that all worth a simple phone call to our Tips Line?

How is My Reward Paid?

When you phone in your tip, you are given a code number by the officer answering the phone. Only you have that number. The officer will tell you when to call again to ascertain if your information qualified for a reward. If so, the Coordinator will set up a pay out that is convenient to the caller.
